Job Opportunities Abound in Uptown Charlotte

Office Workers

Nine Fortune 500 companies have their world headquarters right here in Charlotte, North Carolina, and since 1990 new and expanding businesses have invested more than $18 billion here, creating more than 170,000 new jobs.

World-class companies such as Bank of America, Wachovia, Duke Energy, Goodrich, General Dynamics, and Lowe's have benefited tremendously from the competitive regional workforce and continue to invest heavily in local educational institutions and associated training programs respective to their industry.

Here is just a sampling of the major industries and business opportunities that can be found in Charlotte’s 16 county region.

Automotive:

For many people the names Charlotte and NASCAR run together like Peanut butter and Jelly – and for good reason. Charlotte is home for 90% of NASCAR’s racing teams and less then 50 miles away is the NASCAR Research and Development Center. In March of 2006 NASCAR confirmed its deep roots with Charlotte by naming The Queen City to be the home of the official NASCAR Hall of Fame.

But if you think Charlotte’s automotive interests end there you need to look a bit deeper. Over 700 transportation equipment related companies have facilities within the Charlotte region. These companies currently employ nearly 20,000 workers.

Assebly Plant

Freightliner, a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler, has three major assembly plants in the region, and BMW’s only U.S. assembly facility is just 75 miles from the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport.

Machine Manufacturing and Metal Working:

There are currently over 1250 companies that manufacture machine and machine parts in the counties that surround Charlotte. Originally drawn to Charlotte because of its proximity to textile and furniture industries, the machine and machine tool industry now employs over 12,300 workers.

Companies that have production facilities in the Charlotte region include Cooper Tools, Honeywell, Ingersoll-Rand, Siemens Westinghouse, Colfax, Chiron America, INA, Okuma Machine Tools, PCI Wedeco, Schrader-Bridgeport, and Timken.

In all, more than 800 metalworking companies are doing work in the Charlotte Region.

Medical Equipment Manufacturing

Pooling on Charlotte’s machine and metal working industry, the Medical Equipment Manufacturing industry has also found a home here. There are currently over 60 companies, employing over 2,000 highly skilled workers, that that produce medical devices and equipment in the Charlotte region. Some of these include Hartmann-Conco Inc., Scott Health and Safety, and Zimmer Orthopedic Surgical.

Financial Services and Insurance

Office BuildingCharlotte is the second largest financial center in the United States. Only New York holds more financial assets than Charlotte. Bank of America and Wachovia, the largest and 4 th largest banking institutions in the country, both call Charlotte home. In all, almost 60,000 workers are employed by 253 financial service companies.

Financial Service Companies who operate in an around Charlotte include CitiFinancial, GE Capital/Lowe’s Credit, and Wells Fargo Home Mortgage Inc., and TIAA-CREF. In addition Allstate, AmeriCredit, The Hartford, Kemper, Liberty Mutual, MetLife, Nationwide, State Farm, and Travelers all have operational or processing centers in the Charlotte region.
