Charlottes Streetcar Suburbs: Welcome to the Neighborhood!

Old Charlotte is part of Charlotte’s original landscape. These communities date back to the turn of the century and have a range of housing that features older bungalows, mansions, and many newly constructed homes. Here you will find some of Charlotte’s most charming, historical, and eclectic streets and neighborhoods. These include Myers Park, Elizabeth, Eastover, Chantilly, and Dilworth among others. I am proud to say that I consider myself to be an expert on the following Charlotte neighborhoods.

Myers Park

Myers Park is located along the eastern edge of the community, just off of Providence Road. It differentiates itself from other sections of Old Charlotte in its layout. The neighborhood was designed with curving streets, to flow with the natural landscape. The towering oaks that line the quaint streets of Myers Park originally came from the New Jersey farm of tobacco tycoon James B. Duke.

This neighborhood has a long history of being very popular with buyers. The homes are generally large, stately, and very well-maintained. Prices in Myers Park range from about $500,000 up to $2 million.

Dilworth

 “Thin people grow fat at Dilworth. The fresh air and general surroundings are so healthy they can’t help it.” – Edward Dilworth Latta

Mr. Latta was not only responsible for this well know description of the community he established in 1890, he is also greatly responsible for the visionary planning that made Dilworth possible. A particular example was his contracting with the Edison Electric Company to install Charlotte’s first trolley system.

The cities first streetcar suburb is known for its renovated craftsman style bungalows, churches, and beautiful tree lined streets. East Boulevard forms the neighborhood’s spine, offering restaurant, shops, and office space within walking distance of its homes.

Sedgefield

Built after World War II, Dilworth’s close neighbor features homes that are smaller with yards that are generally larger. In Sedgefield you will find cottages, colonials, and brick ranch style homes. As in a number of Charlotte’s other ring neighborhoods restorations and renovations abound on every block of Sedgefield’s tree-lined streets.

Madison Park

Not long ago Madison Park was one of Charlotte's best kept secrets. Housing cost in the 1950’s constructed neighborhood is generally more affordable then the neighborhoods that surround it. Today, say Madison Park to a city realtor and watch their eyes light up. They know what an exceptional find Madison Park is. The neighborhood features homes that are generally 1,500 square feet, are made of brick, and feature hardwood floors. It is encompassed by the South Park to the south, Myers Park to the East, Dilworth to the North, and the Southend to the East.

Colonial Village

Colonial Village is another 1950’s style Charlotte neighborhood that is in high demand. An affordable alternative to Dilworth and Sedgefield, Colonial Village homes can be purchased for $180,000 to $270,000 for a 1500 to 1800 square foot home. If you are willing to pull down some wallpaper and pick up a paint brush there are still bargains to be had in Colonial Village.

With the planned light rail line scheduled to begin running down the South Boulevard corridor next year, Colonial Village is being recast as a town neighborhood. It is a convenient 10 minute commute to Center City and also sits near the Park Road Shopping Center on the edge of Myers Park.

Wesley Heights

Developed in the 1920’s, this neighborhood on Charlotte’s northwest side is a designated historic district. That historic designation is a testament to Wesley’s ambitious neighborhood organization. Aggressive rejuvenation has transformed the once crime ridden neighborhood into one of Charlotte's more charming locations.

The neighborhood’s Bungalow style homes and tree canopied streets make it a perfect location for home buyers who are seeking an Uptown location but want to get much more space for their dollar.

Celadon

Wilmore

With its location near Dilworth, SouthEnd, and downtown and spectacular views of the city skyline, Wilmore has quickly positioned itself as one of Charlotte's premier ring neighborhoods. Wilmore features homes that are 1200 to 1600 square feet and range in prices from just below $200,000 to $450,000. It’s 1 mile distance from downtown make the 1920’s and 30’s built homes perfect for those who desire as little commute to work as possible. Many residents even choose to walk to work or take the Trolley that runs along its western border.

Once one of Charlotte’s most crime-ridden neighborhoods, residents now take great pride in their Wilmore addresses and with an 89% appreciation in the last five years they should!

Elizabeth

Elizabeth takes its name from Elizabeth College, a small Lutheran women’s college founded in 1897 on the present-day site of Presbyterian Hospital. Home to North Carolina’s largest community college and Charlotte's oldest public park, Elisabeth’s turn of the century homes have become a leading place to dwell for many of Charlotte's finest. Elizabeth features a broad range architecture including many Victorian-style homes with colorful exteriors and inviting front porches.

Chantilly

Neighboring Elizabeth and Plaza-Midwood, Chantilly has seen a great deal of transformation. With a 60% increase in market value in the last two years Chantilly’s residents are eager to see further improvements. This neighborhood features many attractive and recently renovated homes in the bungalow and cottage style. There are also a number of newer homes in the community. Average prices in the neighborhood range from the low $100,000 to $300,000.
